Youth First Aid for Mental Health

Overview

This two-day course is ideal for anyone who lives with, works with, or supports young people aged 8 to 18 and wants to gain the knowledge, awareness, and skills to spot the signs of a young person experiencing poor mental health, the confidence to start a conversation, and the tools to safeguard and signpost to appropriate support.

Syllabus

A range of Youth Mental Health First Aid related subjects are covered including:

  • Explain what mental health is 
  • Describe how to look after their own mental health and wellbeing 
  • Describe the signs of poor mental health in young people 
  • Explain some of the risk factors associated with poor mental health in young people 
  • Demonstrate how to apply the Youth MHFA action plan (ALGEE®) in a Youth Mental Health First Aid conversation 
  • Describe the role of a Youth MHFAider®
  • Know how to use the MHFAider Support App®

Duration

The minimum classroom contact time is 14-hours spread over two days – but can be spread over four individual sessions to suit the learners.

Numbers

A maximum of 16 students are allowed on the course and must be a minimum of 16 years of age. A certificate can be offered to all, subject to assessment.

Assessment

A range of methods are used, including practical and questioning.

Certification

Mental Health First Aid England certificated course, subject to successful completion. This qualification is valid for three years from the date of achievement. The learner will need to complete a half-day Youth MHFA Refresher course to requalify for a further three years
